AAOMS has an affiliation base of more than 7000 fellows, members and residents in the United States as well as 250 affiliate members from nations around the world. Major activities include monthly publication of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the annual meeting attended by approximately 4,000 people each year, the three day mid-winter conference, numerous other educational and research activities as well as comprehensive government relations, insurance and communications programs. Related organizations formed by the specialty include the OMS Foundation (OMSF) established in 1959, the OMS Political Action Committee (OMSPAC) established in 1971 and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) established in 1946.
The Mission of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is to provide a means of self-government relating to professional standards, ethical behavior and responsibilities of its fellows and members; to contribute to the public welfare; to advance the specialty; and to support its fellows and members through education, research and advocacy.
